Among the old headstones in the old burying ground in St. John is one that marks the grave of an old Scotch soldier. It is recorded in the provincial papers that John PAUL, the soldier who lies buried here, fired the first shot on the British side at the memorial battle of Lexington, thus inaugurating the great struggle of the American revolutionary war. On the headstone is cut the following epitaph.

Sacred

to the memory of

John Paul

a native of Lanark, Scotland

who departed this life on the

29th day of April 1833

in the 83rd year of his age.
