“This place of internment lies on the eastern side of the City of Saint at the head of Courtenay Bay. It contains about three acres of land. I has been in use ever since the year 1784, Eliza, the wife of Dr Nathan Smith having been buried there in January of that year. This was just eight months after the landing of the Loyalists at St John.
The manner in which the cemetery is kept is not creditable to the Church Corporation which has it in charge. Many of the Loyalist Fathers of the City are buried here and a still larger number of the men and women of the second generation. Internments still take place in this ground although the Old Burial Ground in the heart of the City has been closed for more than 60 years. Few of the stones are of real antiquity and it is evident that most of the earlier tombstones have been destroyed or removed.”

Sacred to the memory of Nehemiah Merritt Esq who departed this life on the 25th May 1842 in the 72nd year of his age. A native of New York, he at an early age left that country to retain unsullied his allegiance to his sovereign and accompanied the Loyalists who in 1783 landed in this province where by a long and unweaned course of industry, prudence and integrity he acquired the respect and esteem of this community and was for several years Chief of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the City and County of St John.

The remains of Capt Irving are interred on this spot those of the sufferers with him are interred in the graveyard in the City.

Sacred to the memory of Honorable Robert Parker Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Brunswick son of the late Robert Parker Esq Controller of Her Majesty’s Customs. After having represented his native county of St John for several years, in the General Assembly and filled the offices of Attorney and Solicitor General. He was raised to the Bench of the Supreme Court AD 1834 and shortly after the resignation of Sir James Carter with the Satisfaction of All Classes who raised to the office of Chief Justice. He died the 24th Nov 1865 aged 69 years.
