From
the genealogical information available online at rootsweb.com and ancestry.com,
it seems the originals of these two brothers are believed to be a family that
originally settled on Long Island that may have been called Thorneycraft.
What’s know for certain is that Susannah Wetmore received a pension from the
colonial government of New Brunswick in the 1840s based on her husband’s service
in the volunteer cavalry of Col DeLancey’s Regiment
during the Revolution. Following the revolution, they came to New Brunswick and
settled in Saint John.
John
Thorn Craft Jr was one of the sons of Susannah
Wetmore and John Thorn Craft and he married in Saint John Phoebe Dunham whose
family had a long history going back to Richard and Susanna Singletary who
lived in the Plymouth Colony in the 1630s. It’s not known on what ship Richard
and Susanna arrived in the Plymouth colony but there are records of the birth
of their children and, in particular, their son Jonathan who was famously
exiled by the colonial government (ie, Town Meeting).
Jonathan then went to New Jersey, changing his surname from Singletary to
Dunham for some unknown reason, and he and his wife settled there. New Jersey
was then a Dutch possession and operated as a business by the Dutch West Indies
Company. Jonathan’s wife, Mary Bloomfield, who could speak the Indian
languages, made herself invaluable to the Dutch leadership by translating for
them. Jonathan became a well to do farmer and owned a grist mill. He himself
was involved in the politics of the day representing the other English planters
in the New Jersey in their relations with the Dutch administration in Nieuw Amsterdam as New York was earlier known. They had a
number of children

Margaret E Waller in about 1893. She had a son William Litton living with them
in 1910 in Everett, where he died on 29 Dec 1913 (found him in the death index
where I hadn’t looked before).

who opened a small retail and grocery business in 1873. At first, buying and
selling candy was just a small part of their business. The brothers soon
realized they had to specialize in certain products to gain an edge on their
competitors. Selling fresh oysters was one of the things they tried, as well as
making and marketing their own brand of soap. But it was when they began making
their own candy that the foundation was set for what is now Canada's oldest

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Scott Craft CD, a direct descendant
of Susannah Wetmore and her husband, Loyalist John Thorn Craft, who served in
the volunteer cavalry in Col. DeLancey’s Regiment
during the American Revolution, is commanding officer of the 8th Canadian
Hussars (Princess Louise’s) at Sussex, Kings County, NB, the oldest armoured unit of the Canadian Armed Forces. Originally
founded as the New Brunswick Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry in 1848 by the
regimentation of a number of independent cavalry troops whose history goes back
to cavalry units that served in the American Revolution, in particular to 1775
in the Colony of Virginia, where a Captain John Saunders raised a troop of
cavalry (Saunders’ Horse) at his own expense to fight for the Crown against the
colonial rebels, which unusual troop included riflemen, grenadiers, artillery
and cavalry and never knew defeat until the British surrender at Yorktown in
October 1783. In September 1783, Saunders’ horse as an entity was dispatched to
New Brunswick where a large number of these Loyalist solders, including
soldiers of Col DeLancey’s Regiment, settled in the
Saint John and Kennebecasis valleys. The New Brunswick
Militia Act of 1825 permitted the raising of cavalry troops by voluntary
enlistment for attachment to the various county infantry battalions. Many
amongst those who enlisted in these troops were the sons and grandsons of those
who served with John Saunders in Virginia and Col DeLancey
in the New York area.. By authority of Militia General
Order Number One on 4 April 1848, eleven independent troops were united to from
a regiment entitled the New Brunswick Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry. It is this
date that is officially recognized as the formation of the Regiment. The
regiment was the first volunteer cavalry regiment in British North America. LCol Craft, an Investment Advisor in St John, NB, married
